Know Your Strength

       The word mentor comes from the character "Mentor" in Homer's epic tale, The Odyssey. Mentor was a trusted friend of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. When Odysseus fought in the Trojan War, Mentor served as friend and counsel to Odysseus' son Telemachus.

The best example of mentor we can get from Mahabharata “an Indian epic book” where Lord Krishna played as mentor and Arjuna was as mentee from beginning to end. Krishna guided him whenever Arjuna had any problem . Krishna behaved as friend, guardian , experienced king, enlighten person and guide to reach properly to his goal.

Swami Vivekananda has said -

The person from whose soul such impulse comes is called the Guru — the teacher;

and the person to whose soul the impulse is conveyed is called the Shishya — the student.

“ आश्चर्यो वक्ता कुशलोऽस्य लब्धा ”

And when both of these are really wonderful and extraordinary, then will a splendid spiritual awakening result, and not otherwise. Such alone are the real teachers, and such alone are also the real students, the real aspirants.

Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment tool. It is an effective way of helping individuals to progress in their careers and is becoming increasing popular as its potential is realised. Actually Its a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences. It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and other word one can say mentor means “an experienced and trusted adviser”

Today, most of the youths, parents and organisation recognize the importance of a student having a caring responsible adult in their lives.

Why Mentor is needed:

  • Career planning and progression
  • Balance between thought and approach
  • Mental strength
  • Development of new skills such as leadership or public speaking
  • Mentees report the benefits of a different perspective
  • Mentees are more likely to plan and apply for new opportunities
  • Mentors and mentees can gain insights into best business practices
  • The process allows mentors and mentees to make useful networking connections
  • Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be." Eric Parsloe oxford
